Entering San Diego Bay

Sailing into San Diego Bay is fun on a sunny Sunday afternoon as there were thousands of boating sailing throughout the length of the bay. Our marina is 12 miles from the harbor entrance. We are docked now for a while at Chula Vista Marina. Time to reflect on our passage of 1500 nautical miles, do repairs and plan for the next adventure. We will be sad to say good bye to Denis on Wednesday. We will be a team of 2 again.

Wow, 1500 nautical miles, quite an accomplishment -- congratulations! I'm so glad Denis was able to go with you and that you all had such a successful trip.

When you come to Seattle area again, stop by -- we'll take you out to our neighborhood pub, where you will feel right at home. I'm sure Denis has already told you this. : )

From all the nice things said about me in this blog the reader might be excused for thinking I'm insufferably perfect. Not so — and here is my confession — at Chula Vista I was brought back to the boat by the police! It's not as bad as it sounds — no, I didn't get into a barroom brawl or other such sailorly activity. I just got lost, or as they say 'temporarily uncertain of my position'. Anyone who knows Chula Vista will wonder how this could be — there is nothing there but the marina and two restaurants in the middle of a wasteland. Anyway after my 'despedida' I decided to go for a wee stroll and at some point got confused as to my course-over-ground. Although not yet midnight there was nobody around except for a cruising patrol car—so (and you may find this unbelievable) I flagged it down!! “Good evening constables”, I said, “would you be so good as to direct me to the sailing shipTalaria?”—“Where is it sir?”— “hmm... I'm afraid I don't know officer...”. I only wanted directions, but the amiable officers cheerfully insisted I get in the back (no, they did not cuff me!). Anyway they conducted me back to the ship, refusing to leave me at the gate as they 'were responsible for me', and insisted on waking the owners to identify me. How embarrassing! (the alternative, they told me, was that I could accompany them back to the station). So here's to the Chula Vista PD!

Deena and Rick were back in the PNW recently and we had a few pints at The Fiddlers Inn. I was glad to hear they are still as full of themselves about the epic voyage as I am! I was also able to show that I CAN actually cook something!

It was a great trip, I'd go as far as to say it was a 'life-experience'. That might sound strange in view of the bad weather, the wet socks, and me suffering a cold from Bodega Bay onwards. But it was uncannily like being 'back at sea' (I mean in the Merchant Marine) with great shipmates, friends, and a terriffic team spirit. Thanks for having me along.
